Boy Scouts to Host Annual Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser Sunday, Feb. 26 at 5 PM

Bring your family and friends for a delicious spaghetti dinner hosted by the local Boy Scouts at the Northfield Community Church, 400 Wagner Road (Willow and Wagner Roads) on Sunday, February 26 from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM.  Give Mom or Dad a night off of cooking and help local Scouts raise funds for planned activities in 2012.

Lutheran Church of the Ascension Offers On-Going Yoga Classes Mondays at 9 AM

Luthern Church of the Ascension located at Willow Road at 460 Sunset Ridge Road (enter at the northeast corner of the building) is sponsoring on-going beginning yoga classes in the Augustana Room on Mondays from 9:00-10:00 AM.  Parcipants are asked to bring a mat and wear comfortable clothing.  Fee is $10 per class.  Contact Gail Price for information, 847-446-8335 or gail@ascension-church.org.

Temple Jeremiah Offers Programs Open to the Community

Temple Jeremiah, a Reform Jewish congregation affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism, located at 937 Happ Road in Northfield, holds weekly worship services and study programs. Enjoy Ice Skating and Warmups by the Fireplace at Clarkson Park Rink--Bring children and friends for a skate at Clarkson Park, 1950 Willow Road.  Warm up in the Lodge in front of the fireplace with hot chocolate and snacks available for purchase.  Skating is free.  Check the website for updates on conditions, www.northfieldparks.org. Rink hours when ice conditions are favorable are as follows:

North Shore Senior Center Offers a Variety of Programs and Special Events

Northfield Seniors and others will find a wealth of programs and events offered at the North Shore Senior Center located at 161 Northfield Road in Northfield. Some events and classes are free and open to the public, others require fees. Reservations are need for most events. Thursday, Feb. 23--New Horizons Band at 1:00 p.m.  REVISED DATE!  Enjoy a lively and diverse concert performance of symphonic band music with the New Horizons Band, a unique group of talented older adults.  Concert is free - no registration required.


Sunday, Mar. 11--When Music Was Music with The Falconaires Orchestra at 2:00-3:30 p.m.  Experience the sound of the Falconaires Orchestra playing "When Music was Music" from the Great American Song Book.  You will hear songs from the 1920s to the present.  Comprised of 17 musicians and a vocalist conducted by Mr. Norm Friede.  This is a concert you will not want to miss!  Fee:  $10 member & non-member. 


Sunday, Apr. 22--Thanks for the Memory:  The Golden Age of Song with the Rose Colella Trio at 2:00 - 3:30 p.m.  Enjoy a special afternoon of music with this Chicago-based jazz trio featuring vocalist Rose Colella who specializes in songs from The Great American Songbook.  Trio performs tunmes from the 1930s and 1940s including those made famous by jazz icons Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. 


Sunday, May 6--12th Annual Samuel Thaviu Memorial Concert featuring Rachel Barton Pine at 1:00-3:00 p.m.  Join us for an enchanting afternoon of violin performed by the World Renowned Grammy Winner, Rachel Barton Pine.  Rased in Chicago, Rachel is considered a child prodigy and currently has a very active career performing classical, baroque, and rock.  Reception to follow concert.  Fee:  $10 member & non-member. 


NSSC Day Trips


Wednesday, Mar. 7--Show Boat at the Lyric Opera, 10:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m.  This masterpiece created by Jerome Kern in 1927 gave musical theater and opera a new voice in an atmosphere of Americana.  Moving from 1890s Mississippi to Chicago to Broadway in the 1920s, Show Boat follows the lives of a company of theater folk.  Come hear the outstanding cast in "Ol Man River," "Make Believe," "Bill," and "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man."  Fee includes ticket, lunch and bus:  $129 member/$144 non-member. 


Friday, Mar. 30--Art in Bloom at the Milwaukee Art Museum, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.  Enjoy the art, dramatic architecture and landscape design of the first Santiago Calatrava-designed building in the U.S.  In addition see the exquisite floral creations by Milwaukee's top floral designers inspired by the Museum's Collection of masterworks and scattered throughout the museum - a perfect way to welcome spring.  Lunch at the Lake Park Bistro.  Fee includes fees, lunch and bus:  $89 member/$104 non-member.

Share the Warmth. Do you crochet or knit?  Would you like to learn?  Lend your helping hands by making blankets for persons undergoing chemotherapy.  Join our dedicated volunteers who crochet decorative borders for colorful fleece blankts.  Here's how you can help:


--join the volunteers who make blankets at North Shore Senior Center; start a new volunteer group at a location of your choice, or make blankets on your own in the comfort of your home.


Blankets have been donated to patients at the University of Chicago Medical Center and NorthShore University HealthSystem's Kellogg Cancer Centers.  To learn more, contact Maura Rogan at mrogan@nssc.org or 847-784-6052.


Friendly Visitor Volunteers Wanted. Brighten someone's day at a Friendly Visitor, a volunteer who provides companionship to one senior in his/her home.  You can meet at mutually convenient times (ideally once weekly) and engage in activities such as looking at photos, working on a puzzle, listening to music and watching a ball game.  Matches are made based upon geography and interests.  Many seniors are in need of this relationship and you will feel the benefits of volunteering as well!  Learn more by contacting Maura Rogan at mrogan@nssc.org or 847-784-6052.


Food Drive Contributions. Help make the holidays bountiful for others by donating to  NSSC's Food Drive for the New Trier and Northfield Township food pantries.  The donation bin is located outside the Lifelong Learning office in the Senior Center.  If you are too busy to shop you can make a cash donation to the food drive at the A&A Cafe in the Senior Center.  Note:  Food items with expired code dates cannot be accepted. Your support is appreciated.


New Congregate Lunch Program. The NSSC's Congregate Lunch Program is funded under Title III of the Older Americans Act of 1965, as amended. Its purpose is to provide hot, healthy middaymeals to people 60 years of age and older. Join us at the Senior Center, 161 Northfield Road in Northfield every Monday and Wednesday at noon for good food and a chance to meet other seniors who live in the surrounding communities. Suggested donation $3 or any amount you are able to give.


Volunteer at the House of Welcome. Get involved in The House of Welcome (HOW), the North Shore Senior Center'sspecialized adult day services for persons with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.  Areas you can help in:  Program Assistant - interact with staff and participants as you help with activities ranging from word games and discussion groups to art projects and baking.  A weekly commitment is needed; Music Volunteer - play the piano or other musical instrument to entertain and engage the participants.  Volunteer once or twice each month; Pet Therapy Volunteer - bring your certified therapy dog to HOW.  Share your time twice monthly.  For more information, contact Maura Rogan, 847-784-6052 or mrogan@nssc.org.


Volunteer to Match Drivers with Senior that Need Rides to Medical and Dental Appointments. The North Shore Senior Center has a program called Escorted Transportation Service (ETS) which matches volunteer drivers with seniors who need rides to medical and dental appointments.  The program relies heavily on volunteer coordinators who, from their homes, listen to the ride requests on a designated voicemail and call our volunteer drivers to see if they are able to help.  Each coordinator takes a two-week shift on a rotating basis to listen to the requests and make the matches.  The time commitment on average is 5-10 hours every two weeks.  Need to be reliable and have strong phone skills.  Computer experience a plus.  To learn more about becoming an ETS coordinator, contact Maura Rogan, 847-784-6052 or mrogan@nssc.org.

Home Repairs for Seniors.  Seniors who need repairs they cannot afford may be eligible to have free repairs performed on National Rebuilding Day on April 30, 2011 by a crew of volunteers.  Rebuilding North Suburban Chicago brings volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of the elderly, disabled and veterans who are also low-income residents to enable them to continue to live in safe and healthy homes.  Visit www.rebuildingtogethernsc.com to download an application from the "Forms" section.  Applications due by February 2, 2011 - early application is encouraged.  For more information, call 847-869-0900.

Sunset Ridge School District 29 Newsletter Available to All Residents

Important information, news items and feature articles about School Distict 29 and the students, staff and programs offered at Middlefork and Sunset Ridge Schools is available in the District 29 Newsletter.  If you would like to receive this newsletter whether or not you have children attending District 29 schools, contact Jamie O'Connor at oconnorj@sunsetridge29.net or call 847-881-9401.  Newletters are mailed to homes in fall, winter summer and spring.  Past copies of the newsletter are available on the District 29 website, www.sunsetridge29.net.  Click on "Our District" and "Publications" to view past issues.
